Optical communications uses light as the transmission medium. Although historically humans used optical means for the first long distance communications, in today’s technology optical communications is among the most advanced technology on the planet, hardly related to the optical means of old.  Today’s optical communications use optical fiber as a channel and optical waveguides within computers or communications gear.  The transmitters in optical fiber links are generally light emitting diodes or laser diodes.
